The Boston Korean Singers (BKS) is a vibrant community choir with members from across the Greater Boston area who together explore the rich resonance of sound and harmony through mindful breathing and vocalization practices. Deeply rooted in cultural celebration and community service, BKS brings people together through our signature Bibim Concert Series—a unique experience that blends the beauty of Korean music with traditional food. Committed to sharing the healing power of song, our members also proudly serve the community by providing regular singing services at local senior centers.
Francis Kweon (권정규)
Director / Conductor
Francis began his musical career more than 30 years ago at Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance. That same year, he started conducting at the Seoul Catholic Church, sparking a lifelong passion for choral conducting. He later moved to Boston to continue his studies at the Boston Conservatory and the Longy School of Music of Bard College, persuing a Performance Artist Diploma. Since 1999, Francis has served as the Music Director and Conductor for the Korean Catholic Church in Massachusetts, a role he continues to hold with dedication and distinction.
-
Francis founded the Caritas Choir, which hosted annual concerts from its inception in 2001 until 2010. The Choir's success brought joy to the Korean and Greater Boston community, fostering a powerful bond through music and raising the profile of the Korean Catholic Community. He views it as his apostolic mission to find and share the meaning of faith with others through singing and praise.
Ever since beginning his career as a conductor, Francis has been deeply interested in helping singers of all skill levels achieve fulfillment through healthy vocal technique, with particular emphasis on breathing. His whole-body approach to singing draws upon both practical experience and academic research. Francis believes in the transformative power of music and the authenticity of the human voice—especially that of amateur singers. Guided by the conviction that anyone can become a capable singer with proper training, he founded the Boston Korean Singers in 2013. Since then, the ensemble has flourished, presenting numerous concerts and community performances. Notably, the Bibim Concert in 2019 and Bibim II Concert in 2022 attracted large audiences, combining musical performance with a cultural exchange, as audiences were invited to share Korean bibimbap following the concerts.
His voice is distinguished by its rich tonal variety and resonant depth. More than technical mastery, it is his ability to move the hearts of his listeners that reflects his belief that singing is ultimately an art of emotion beyond technique. As both a vocal instructor and conductor for the Korean Catholic Church, Francis continues to inspire and uplift others, extending his influence throughout the local community and beyond.
